The Oregon coast – Cannon Beach in particular – is a wonderful hidden gem of a location to take a fall vacation. 1) A Quieter Cannon Beach

The most popular season to visit the Oregon coast is the summer when conditions are mild and warm, and families are on vacation. By the end of August, most of those summer crowds have gone, leaving Cannon Beach refreshingly quiet.

During fall, you’ll have most of the area’s most popular attractions all to yourself. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect with coastal landscape, enjoying the soothing sounds of tumbling waves and gentle winds.

Additionally, the many Cannon Beach shops and restaurants are far less busy. Just you and us locals will be there to enjoy the charming village, making for a remarkably relaxing vacation experience.

2) Fun Cannon Beach Festivals and Events

Just because the big crowds are gone doesn’t mean the party has to stop. Rather, the party just becomes more laid back and refined. If you visit us in the fall, you’ll see that with our Cannon Beach events.

From September 30th through October 29th, check out the Savor Cannon Beach Wine & Culinary Festival. Over the course of this month-long festival, you can enjoy the delicious specialty dishes from our local chefs. There are unique wine tastings for you to experience award-winning wines. Art Galleries host some of the many scheduled events, a perfect setting.

Additionally, there’s the Stormy Weather Arts Festival taking place from November 4th through the 6th. Here you can enjoy a selection of galleries, artist demonstrations, paint classes, and more from renowned artists!

Finally, there’s WOW! Weekend, a perfect girl’s getaway taking place from November 11th to the 13th. WOW! (AKA Women’s Only Weekend) has evolved from its small beginnings as a women-only pajama party in 2008 to a full-on festival of fun group events. Now the festival is open to everyone – not just women – to relax, have fun, and enjoy the splendid scenery at Cannon Beach in the fall.

3) Magnificent Oregon Coast Scenery

Year-round, Cannon Beach offers some of the finest scenery along the Oregon coast. Fall getaways grant you the chance to see some of the most dramatic conditions of this coastal landscape. You can adventure out to experience the drama first-hand, or enjoy the views cozied up by your vacation rental’s window with a blanket and a good book.

Calm days bring pleasant conditions that are perfect for exploring the beaches, tidepools, and many enchanting hiking trails. Once October arrives, cloudy and partly days at Cannon Beach do increase significantly. However, with those clouds come the opportunities to witness the skies light up in breathtaking fashion over the rugged coastal landscape.

Although these conditions are certainly gorgeous to see, the occasional storms at Cannon Beach bring a whole new level of spectacle. Imposing dark clouds churn in over the sea and beaches, creating incredibly dramatic scenes across the coast at sites like Haystack Rock. And when the thunderstorms bring wind, rain, and lightning to Cannon Beach shores, you’ll love watching the magnificent show from the deck of your vacation rental.

Be sure to review this beach safety guide before you go out in stormy or potentially stormy weather at Cannon Beach.

4) Taste Delicious Fall Flavors

Between exploring the coastal scenery and enjoying all the fun local events, you’ll need some good fall-flavored nourishment! Here in Cannon Beach, we have plenty of welcoming restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops to warm you up with delicious drinks and dishes.

For hot morning beverages on the beach or your patio, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better cup of tea or coffee than at Sleepy Monk Coffee Roasters. This local favorite coffee shop roasts its own beans, and they prepare delicious homemade pastries every day. You can get Sleepy Monk drinks and pastries to-go, or enjoy them from the shop’s Adirondack chairs out front.

Elsewhere in the country fall flavors might not equate to seafood, but things are a little different here along coastal Oregon. Seafood is great year-round at Cannon Beach, and fall is no exception with local restaurants packing great locally sourced seafood.

Alternatively to going out for your seafood, you can catch and cook your own gourmet meal from the sea by crabbing for Dungeness Crab. Fall is the best season for crabbing in coastal Oregon, as this is after the Dungeness Crabs have finished molting. Once you’ve caught your fill, you can cook up your own delicious crab dinner right in your vacation rental kitchen. Check out the Department of Fish & Wildlife website for licensing information.

5) Spend a Rainy Day Uncovering the Past at the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum

The Cannon Beach History Center & Museum is a great place to visit, especially on rainy days in the fall. At the museum you’ll find fascinating artifacts from Cannon Beach’s history, including the preserved ship cannon from 1898 which inspired our town’s name. The museum also hosts an impressive collection of over 12,000 historic photos in its archives. A perfect view back in time on our quaint coastal town.

Additionally, the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum puts on exciting specialty events and exhibits. Stop by for an intriguing lecture, stretch your legs on a guided or self-guided tour, or even attend a concert or beer tasting. You’ll definitely find much more to enjoy than only the fascinating museum.

And that’s it for our list of five ways you can enjoy a perfect Oregon fall vacation at Cannon Beach. In short, if you love spectacular scenery, exciting events, and delicious food, then you need to add Cannon Beach to your fall vacation itinerary. Just eight minutes south of Cannon Beach, down Highway 101 (hwy 101), Arch Cape, Oregon, waits, ready to welcome outdoor enthusiasts with open arms. Whether you’re a lover of landscape photography, hiking, beachcombing (see what we did there?), or you just want to explore more of the rugged Pacific coast while you’re here, it’s a location that delivers on every level.
Experience everything from giant rock formations to ancient hidden forests when you follow our ultimate guide to outdoor fun in Arch Cape, Oregon. A day here is the perfect addition to your Cannon Beach vacation, so let’s check out all there is to do!

Hug Point

At low tide, Hug Point is a fantastic spot for families, especially those with young kids. Aptly named from the days when early settlers and travelers had to “hug” the rocks to get around the cape when the water went out, the area is filled with things to explore.
Climb through caves cut from years of crashing waves and squeeze through rock formations that connect to hidden wonders. Thanks to the frequent rains the area sees, the waterfall at Hug Point gently cascades down to the beach, creating tide pools that kids will love splashing around in. Search for seashells, starfish, and sea anemones, and see what marine creatures you can uncover.
Visiting the Hug Point State Recreation Site requires you pay close attention to tide conditions, so be sure to check before heading out. Pack a picnic and enjoy an afternoon here during your Cannon Beach vacation.

Ghost Forests

Between Hug Point and Oswald West State Park to the south, another low-tide marvel can be found dotting the shoreline. After wild storms ravaged the coast in the early 2000s, sand erosion led to the uncovering of hundreds of barnacle-ridden ancient Sitka Spruce tree stumps, creating what’s known as a Ghost Forest.
The jagged wood, preserved by the saltwater, extends into the surf and, from a distance, looks like a dilapidated structure. It’s not until you get up close that you can truly experience the magic of this wonder. Dating back over 4,000 years, these trees are a prehistoric treasure, and seeing them connects you to a time before humans had even developed writing. Again, be sure to keep an eye on the tides before heading out so you can have the best chance at spotting this unique North Oregon coast feature.

Oregon Coast Trail

Bridge over river in a forest in Oregon

The Oregon Coast Trail stretches over 300 miles from north to south. When it comes to outdoor fun in Arch Cape, taking time to explore part of this famed trek is a must.
Two popular hikes in the Arch Cape branch of the trail are:

Cannon Beach, Arch Cape, and plenty of other Clatsop County communities offer exceptional hiking, so whether you’re sticking around your Beachcomber vacation rental or exploring the surrounding areas, you’re guaranteed to find some outdoor fun during your stay.

Castle Rock

Formed many millions of years ago by volcanic lava flows, Castle Rock is one of several iconic rock formations for which the Oregon coast is known. The basalt formation resembles an old castle turret, thus its unique moniker. For the best views of this mini-Haystack rock, follow signs to Arch Cape beach access. Visit at sunset for gorgeous, silhouetted snapshot opportunities.

Neahkahnie Mountain Viewpoint

An excellent way to enjoy outdoor fun in Arch Cape is to hit the scenic highways and byways. Not only is this a great option for folks who may not be able to do the more physical outdoor activities, but it’s also something you can do regardless of weather and tides.
If you find yourself on the 101, be sure to stop at Neahkahnie Mountain Viewpoint for incredible sights. And if you are interested in hiking, there’s plenty of parking and informational signs that will guide you through the mountain trail to the summit. Be sure to bring your binoculars so you can experience the full force of the expansive coastline.

THE PROBLEM WITH ONLINE TRAVEL AGENCIES

Online travel agencies or OTAs, like Airbnb, VRBO, HomeAway, and Booking.com, have become popular tools for reserving accommodations, but it’s important for travel consumers to be aware that there are several key disadvantages, that likely outweigh the benefit, of booking your vacation rental through these third-party channels.

The post-pandemic era has fostered a whole new segment of vacation rental travelers, due to size, privacy, and guest control, but many of these new vacation renters don’t yet know that the best prices, the best properties, and the best local insight cannot be found on airbnb, VRBO or Booking.com, they’re found by booking direct with vacation rental companies, like Beachcomber Vacation Homes.

WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BOOK DIRECT

  1. Lower Fees – OTAs charge substantial fees to use their sites and that cost is passed off to the guest. Your rates don’t show the hefty booking fees that third-party sites tact on.
  2. More Choices – Many of the best (and most exclusive) homes are not listed on OTA websites.
  3. Exclusive Discounts – Beachcomber Vacation Homes list special offers and discounts that cannot be found on the big websites.
  4. Easy Communication & Customization – Beachcomber Vacation Homes managers can customize or change reservations based on dates or budgets to fit guests’ needs. If you’re using an OTA and want to make any changes, you’ll often have to cancel a reservation and start all over again.
  5. Local Knowledge – Beachcomber Vacation Homes managers know the properties and the area better than anyone and can help match guests with homes based on what local attractions or activities they want to experience. By booking direct, you have a local expert to call for advice and recommendations.
  6. A Better Experience – Guests with special requests or needs can work directly with a Beachcomber Vacation Homes manager to curate a much more personalized vacation.

Located just an hour and a half from Portland, it’s also a convenient spot for those looking for a quick getaway from the bustle of city life.

Astoria

With just 10,000 residents, this small community along the Columbia River has challenged the status quo for 200 years, making it one of the most intriguing Oregon Coast towns. Here, the characters you’ll meet will surprise you at every turn. From the poet-fishermen to the coffee connoisseur outdoorsmen, you can never judge an Astoria book by its cover.

Since its founding, Astoria has survived many highs and lows, more than earning its reputation as the “Little Town That Could.” With just enough grit and edge to keep things growing and the reverence for tradition to ensure that growth never overshadows its seafaring roots, Astoria will surprise and captivate you.

Check out the Columbia River Maritime Museum, where you can experience a piece of Astoria history for yourself when you step aboard the Lightship Columbia, a National Historic Landmark that once helped ships gain safe passage through the Columbia River.

Warrenton

Just across Youngs Bay from Astoria, you’ll find Warrenton, the proverbial “End of the Oregon Trail.” A visit to this small town is a must on any trip to the Oregon Coast. Explore the same land Lewis and Clark roamed in the 1800s and imagine what it would have been like to wander upon this stunning landscape for the first time.

In addition to the beautiful scenery, Warrenton is also full of things to do. For outdoor adventure, you can spend the day camping, hiking wooded trails, or swimming at Coffenbury Lake. Afterward, head to the nearby beach to check out the remains of the “Iron Skeleton,” a large shipwreck from 1906 that still sits embedded in the sand. You can also visit the Fort Stevens Military Museum and add to your dose of history. At night head to Jon’s Seafood Market and Smoke House for a delicious end to the day’s activities.

Manzanita

Neahkahnie Mountain in Manzanita, Oregon

If fishing is on your Oregon Coast itinerary, Manzanita is the place to go. Situated between the Pacific Ocean, Neahkahnie Mountain, and Nehalem Bay, this cozy town is supremely positioned for hauls of steelhead trout, Chinook salmon, and sturgeon. You can also try your hand at crabbing and, at low tide, clam digging! Whether you venture out with a local captain on a fishing charter or you charter your own boat, you’re guaranteed to have plenty of fish tales to take home with you after a day on the wild Pacific.

Tillamook

Cheese lovers are no strangers to the name Tillamook, and for good reason! Thanks to the fertile farmland surrounding this Oregon Coast town, it’s become synonymous with delicious dairy products. When you visit, be sure to stop by the Tillamook Creamery.

The creamery is free to the public and open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. You can take a self-guided tour or book a premium experience tour and tasting, during which you’ll learn all about cheesemaking and sample some of their delicious products.

Beyond produce, Tillamook also has a rich aviation history which dates back to WW2. Visit the public airport museum and view blimps, pilot equipment, and historic aircraft. Or, if you have time, consider taking one of the sightseeing tours on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad!

Garibaldi

At the north end of Tillamook Bay, you’ll find the quiet fishing village of Garibaldi. Once again, if you’ve got the desire to reel in a record-breaking catch or just enjoy the spoils of fishermen’s labors, this is a great spot to be. From Dungeness Crabs and ling cod to rockfish and even the occasional octopus, the waters around Garibaldi are replete with tasty varieties.

Local restaurants serve up fresh line-to-table delicacies every day, while all around, you’ll hear stories of fabled hauls and giant encounters.

If fishing isn’t on the agenda, you can still enjoy the water. Head out on a kayak or canoe and take in the towering trees and soaring bald eagles.

Pacific City

Pacific City is one of the dream towns on the Oregon Coast for surfers. With huge off-shore rocks, towering dunes, and consistent waves, you can paddle out and spend the day chasing the perfect barrel.

When the sun sets, head to one of the local waterfront breweries or restaurants and watch the fishing boats launch or return from their day. Surrounded by Cape Kiwanda, it truly is one of the most picturesque beach towns in the PNW.

Oceanside

With beautiful beaches, quaint cafes, and a plethora of notable landmarks, Oceanside is a great spot to visit with little ones. Head to the shore at low tide and let the kiddos explore tide pools, waterfalls, and tunnels through Maxwell Point. In the distance, the Three Arch Rocks create a great backdrop for family photos.

Low tide is also the best time to access Tunnel Beach, where you can make your way to secret coves and unspoiled beaches. Be sure to keep an eye on the water, though, as rising tides will block your return through the tunnels.

An Oregon winter is certainly not for the faint of heart. Here in the wild Pacific Northwest, our colder months are accompanied by wind, rain, and the beautiful gloom that blankets the region in that all-too-familiar gray haze.
If you’ve grown up here, you know it has a way of sinking into your bones and becoming a part of you. If you’ve never visited, it’s a time of year that highlights the specific splendor of the region. There’s something magical about a wind-whipped coastline and a warm cup of coffee in a local shop that you just have to experience to understand.

If you’re considering visiting Cannon Beach, Oregon, in winter, here are some delightfully unique nearby places you should make sure to visit. Beyond the normal state parks and rock formations, this list will help you immerse yourself in the PNW experience. So, grab your rain jacket and wellies and get ready to have one of the best trips of your year!

Where are the best places to go in Oregon in winter?

Astoria, Oregon

View of the Astoria-Megler bridge in Astoria, Oregon from high above the town.

Just 40 minutes north of Cannon Beach, Astoria is one of the most well-known places along the Oregon Coast… especially for Gen X-ers and Millennials who grew up watching the Goonies.

The famous filming location draws visitors every year as they travel to see rock formations, the Walsh Brother’s house, Data’s house, and more. And if that’s not enough, the Oregon Film Museum is guaranteed to satisfy your itch for Hollywood highlights. Filled with Goonies memorabilia and items from other Oregon-filmed movies it’s a fun way to pass an hour or two on a winter afternoon.

Keep the museum vibe going with a trip to the Columbia River Maritime Museum, where you’ll learn all about the region’s fishing village roots. Seafaring vessels, maritime artifacts, and fine art are all on display, as well as hands-on exhibits.

You can also climb aboard the Lightship Columbia – a floating lighthouse that guided ships to safety around the mouth of the Columbia River, and explore where sailors lived, cooked, and worked.

Twenty minutes from the maritime museum, the Wreck of the Peter Iredale is a must-see historic site. This enormous four-masted steel bark ship ran ashore in 1906, and today, its skeleton is still visible, jutting out from the sandy shores. For the best views, visit at low tide.

Last up for this coastal town is the Astoria-Megler Bridge. At just over four miles long, it’s the longest continuous truss bridge in all of North America. Connecting Route 101 from Astoria to Point Ellice in Washington, you can either opt to make the ride across, or snap pictures from several parts of town. Either way, it’s an impressive sight to behold in winter… or whenever you visit!

Tolovana Park

It doesn’t get more “near Cannon Beach” than Tolovana Park, a quaint neighborhood in Clatsop County just south of Cannon Beach. First, head to Sea Level Bakery for an exquisite cup of PNW coffee. Their made-from-scratch baked goods are otherworldly, so be sure to try a few.

Then, armed with your treats, drive to the Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site, where you can either watch the huge winter waves crash on the shore or, if it’s a calmer day, take a walk along the coast and get a distant view of Haystack Rock. Winter is peak whale watching season, too. So, be sure to scan the distance for tail flaps or breaches of gray whales!

From there, you can head back into Cannon Beach and visit local boutiques, book shops, and art galleries, where you’ll find all sorts of locally made items that will make the perfect keepsake for your Oregon winter vacation.

Tillamook, Oregon

Cape Meares Lighthouse in Tillamook, Oregon

Probably best known for its cheese and ice cream, Tillamook is a great spot to visit at just under an hour south of Cannon Beach. The Tillamook Air MuseumCape Meares Lighthouse, and Tunnel Beach are all excellent spots to check out.

And, of course, if you’re already here, stopping by the Tillamook Creamery is a must. From their guided tour to their delicious products, it’s a perfect way to end your Tillamook visit.

Portland, Oregon

A must-see Oregon winter sight is definitely the Portland Winter Light Festival. While most folks usually come to Cannon Beach from Portland, if you’re visiting the area for the first time, this is a great way to see more than just the beach.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this festival floods the streets of Portland in technicolor as dazzling displays of immersive art pieces fill the city. The festival will take place February 7-15, 2025.

FAQs About Oregon Winter

What is an Oregon winter like?
The weather during an Oregon winter is typically cool and wet, with occasional snow in higher-elevation regions. High daily temperatures hover between the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit. The closer you are to the coast, the more rain you’ll experience, but other regions in the mountains can expect a relatively mild day-to-day forecast.

What is the coldest month in Oregon?
December and January fight it out for the title of the coldest month in Oregon. You can see temps as low as 14 with highs not getting out of the 20s some days. Be sure to pack a warm coat, gloves, a hat, and water-resistant clothing if you’re visiting this time of year.

What is the most beautiful part of Oregon in Winter?
This is highly dependent on who you ask. To us, you can’t beat the Oregon coast. Lined with rugged rock formations and towering lookouts that wind through dense forests… it’s truly a heaven on earth. But Oregon has a little bit of something for everyone.

City folks will love Portland with its unique neighborhoods and ample things to do. Mountain lovers can find their paradise in central Oregon among the Blue and Elkhorn ranges. If you’re looking for wine country, the Willamette Valley and other regions across the western part of the state are filled with rolling hills ripe with grapes. So, whatever kind of experience you want to have, you can find it in Oregon.

½ cup Dutch process cocoa
¼ cup cornstarch
½ teaspoon salt
2 ½ cups milk
1/3 cup unsalted butter, cut up
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Unsweetened whipped cream
Chocolate-filled vanilla wafer sandwich cookies *I use Krumkake, but any light cookie will do

Directions

Whisk together first four ingredients in a medium saucepan. Gradually whisk in milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until pudding boils and is thickened (about 8-10 minutes). Reduce heat to medium-low and cook two more minutes. Remove from heat; add butter and vanilla, stirring gently until butter melts. Summer Travel Tips from a Local

The northern Oregon coast is beautiful all year round, but there’s something magical about the summer sun warming your skin while you take a stroll on soft, gray sands with the sound of the ocean rushing the shore, teasing to finally reach your feet on the next wave. Many of the visitors who frequent Cannon Beach know that there’s a serenity by coming during the off seasons, but summer brings a vibrant liveliness to the coast that’s hard to resist! Here are some tips for making the most out of your summer visit to the northern Oregon coast.
When planning your summer visit, try to book your rental in advance to ensure you’ll find the right property for your needs. Weekends are often busy and have limited parking. If you’re not staying in Cannon Beach, plan on arriving early to ensure you can find a spot. When it gets closer to your arrival, make dinner reservations at popular restaurants, or try dining during off-hours so you can spend your trip enjoying everything the northern Oregon coast has to offer!

Summer Events

Summer on the coast is marked by the sunny days beginning to outnumber the rainy ones. People go outside often to fill their days with the events and activities that are in full swing when the sky is clear.
One of the main events that kick off the summer is the Sandcastle Weekend from June 10th-12th. Start the weekend with a bonfire, music, and smores on the beach. Then come down the next day to see the impressive sandcastles being built in the morning then judged in the evening.
The Fourth of July in Cannon Beach is firework free due to sensitive ecosystems, which makes it a great coast destination if you might be sensitive to the noise or want to bring your pup!  If you still want to get your fill of fireworks on the 4th, nearby Rockaway Beach to the south, and Astoria to the north will have firework displays!
Some ongoing summer events include Haystack Rock Awareness where local volunteers go out during low tide and hand out resources to educate visitors on the importance of Haystack Rock. Nearby, Seaside hosts the monthly First Saturday Art Walks. If you’re interested in picking up fresh, locally grown produce, the Seaside Farmers Market is every Wednesday afternoon June 15th- September. Manzanita also has a farmers market every Friday afternoon June-September.

Cannon Beach Summer Activities

Shopping & Dining

If you need groceries, stop by Manzanita Fresh Foods, Surfcrest Market, or Mariner Market and get what you need for a beach picnic, post-adventure snack, or a delicious dinner at your rental.
When it comes to choosing where to dine out, you have a ton of great options! Before a busy day of adventure, grab a coffee from Insomnia Coffee Co. or Sea Level Bakery, where you can also find delicious fresh pastries. Stop into Pelican Brewery or Public Coast Brewing and try a flight of locally crafted brews (Both also offer vegan and gluten-free options!). Wrap up your day with dinner reservations at Wayfarer or Driftwood.
Looking for retail therapy? One of the perks of visiting Cannon Beach is that the town is extremely walkable! Shop the locally made goods, wine, art, and gifts. Make sure you stop into the pink and white striped Schwieterts cones & candy shop — a trip to the coast isn’t complete without saltwater taffy or an ice-cream cone!

Beaches & Tidepooling

Beaching on the Oregon coast is a little different than many other beach vacation destinations around the world. The mild temperatures are perfect for exploring the many beaches that are sprawled along the northern coastline.
If you want to take a barefoot stroll along the shoreline and look for shells and gemstones that litter the beach after the tide goes out, Cannon Beach has over 8 miles for you to enjoy. The central Cannon Beach parking lot is where you will find the Instagramable Haystack Rock, which is also the busiest place on the beach!  There are several parks along Cannon Beach to park at; Les Shirley Park to the north, and Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site to the south usually fill up later. There are also beaches at Hug PointEcola State Park, and Oswald State Park, but have limited available parking so plan to arrive at those early.
If you’re interested in tidepooling, Arcadia Beach is perfect for exploring tidepools teeming with ocean life. Search for starfish, crabs, anemones, sea urchins, and more! You can also find tidepools at both Oswald State Park and Ecola State Park.

Please use caution as you explore tidepools. The rocks can be slippery and especially dangerous during bad weather. The sea creatures live in a delicate environment so be considerate when exploring their homes.

Surfing

Even in summer, the Pacific stays a chilly 55 degrees but with the right gear that doesn’t stop people from surfing! Take a lesson and rent gear from Cannon Beach Surf Lessons and Rentals. Then head to Short Sand Beach, a local favorite for surfing. You can also find great curls at both Ecola State Park and Oswald State Park, just be sure to check the surfing report before heading out!

Kayak & Paddling Boarding

Maybe you don’t want to get in the water, but what about on the water?
Head up to Seaside and rent a kayak, SUP, or even a swan boat from Wheel Fun Rentals! Paddle around the calm tributaries that feed into the ocean and take in Seaside from a different point of view!

Fishing

You can also get out on the water in a fishing boat! The Oregon coast is known for its world-class fishing. Cast a line from a charter boat or from the beach. During the summer you can deep-sea fish for tuna or salmon. From the shore, you can expect active bites from Surfperch most of the summer near where creeks feed into the ocean or by the jetties.

Rainy Days

When visiting the Oregon coast in the summer, you might get a rainy day. If the rain is really coming down consider taking some time to relax and book yourself a spa treatment and Cannon Beach Spa or join in on a yoga class by Cannon Beach Yoga Arts.

Where to stay in Cannon Beach

When it comes to planning your summer visit, Beachcomber Vacation Rentals has a great selection of Cannon Beach homes for your stay! Try to book your vacation rental early as they fill up quickly. Be prepared for the weekends to be busy with limited parking and consider booking your stay during the week when it’s quieter, or close to town so you don’t have to worry about parking. By planning and booking your stay with Beachcomber Vacation Rentals, you can spend your days enjoying everything Cannon Beach and the surrounding areas have to offer!

Nothing warms a heart or a belly faster than a delicious, homemade bowl of soup. And as we’re inching closer to Thanksgiving and the colder season, there’s never been a better time to try this uniquely fall recipe. Whether you make it in your vacation rental to enjoy after a full day of exploring Cannon Beach or from the comforts of your own kitchen, this Squash, Cider, and Apple Soup recipe will quickly become one of your favorites. Check out the recipe below and give it a try this holiday season.

Squash, Cider and Apple Soup

The real flavor kicker comes from the reduced cider mixture – just pour it into a skillet or wide saucepan and let it boil down while the vegetables cook. The finished soup is laced with cinnamon and clove, and, at that point, the aroma becomes too much to resist.

Ingredients

Melt the butter in a medium-sized soup pot or large saucepan over moderate heat. Stir in the onion, cover, and sweat for 10 minutes.

Add the squash, apples, stock, salt, and bay leaf to the pot. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to moderately low, cover, and simmer the soup until the squash and apples are very soft, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat.

As the soup simmers, pour the cider into a medium-sized skillet, bring to a boil, and reduce to 4 or 5 tablespoons; you don’t have to be too precise about it. Remove from heat.

Remove the bay leaf from the soup, then spoon the solids into a food processor. Process the mixture until smooth, then stir it back into the broth. Add the reduced cider. Reheat the soup, stirring in the brown sugar and spices. Serve piping hot.

Makes 5-6 servings.

*I like to roast the butternut squash and apples first.

Imagine a home filled with the delicious aroma of fall flavors as this soup simmers on your stovetop. It’s altogether cozy and inviting, welcoming you to sink into the comforts of the season.

Many Cannon Beach vacation rentals come with fully equipped kitchens, so if you’re visiting and looking to spend a night in, this Squash, Cider, and Apple Soup is the perfect dinner. Likewise, it makes a great addition to your fall recipe repertoire. We hope you try it and enjoy it as much as we do!

History of Tillamook Creamery

Herd of dairy cows in Tillamook, Oregon

The history of Tillamook Creamery is one of ingenuity, determination, and deliciousness. When cows grazing the lush coastal landscapes began producing excess milk, locals turned to making butter and cheese for trading with neighboring towns. But Tillamook’s remote location posed a significant challenge, forcing residents to find a creative solution to bring their products to the masses.

After two failed attempts at boatbuilding ended in shipwrecks, their persistence paid off. On their third try, they successfully built the Morning Star of Tillamook, launched in 1855, which delivered the county’s first dairy products to Portland. The ship’s legacy lives on, proudly represented in Tillamook’s logo and celebrated by a 38-foot replica outside the creamery.

Quality control became paramount in the early 1900s, with Fred Christensen inspecting cheese and Guy Ford ensuring top-notch milk production. Tillamook trademarked its name and encouraged consumers to “Look for Tillamook on the rind,” creating widespread recognition and boosting sales in cities from Portland to Los Angeles.

In the 1940s, Tillamook expanded into ice cream, quickly becoming popular across Oregon. By 1949, the creamery had modernized with a new plant, introducing innovative packaging and efficient production methods. Their commitment to quality paid off—by 1960, Tillamook cheeses and ice creams had earned more than 270 awards, a tradition of excellence continuing today, most recently winning “Best Cheddar in the World” in 2024.

Crust

¾ cup finely crushed tortilla chips
3 tablespoons melted butter

Filling

1 ½ pounds cream cheese, softened
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon chili powder
4 tablespoons minced green onions
¼ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups finely shredded cooked chicken
8 ounces chopped green chiles, drained
1 ½ cups shredded jalapeno jack cheese
¼ cup roasted red peppers, diced
¼ cup sweet chili sauce

Topping

2 cups sour cream
1/8 teaspoon Tobasco, plus Cholula to taste 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly grease a 9-inch springform pan. Mix crushed chips and butter together and press in bottom of pan. Set aside.
Beat cream cheese in an electric mixer at high speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, diced red peppers, green onions, and sweet chili sauce. Blend thoroughly. Pour ½ of this mixture into pan. Combine chicken, chiles, and cheese and spread evenly on top of cream cheese mixture. Carefully pour remaining cheese mixture over chicken-chile-cheese layer. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 300 degrees and continue baking 40-45 minutes or until set. Center will be soft. Cool on wire rack. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
To serve, unmold cheesecake on serving plate. Combine topping and spread evenly on top of cake. May be served with crackers or dark rye bread.
Serves 50-75 as an hors d’oeuvre.

Note from Cara: “Because I thought it begged to be spicier, I added the roasted red peppers and sweet chili sauce to the filling. I also used jalapeno jack cheese rather than Monterey Jack. It can be layered as in the recipe, but I like to mix it all together. I think it looks more appealing.”
Whether you’re feeding an army or you serve this savory cheesecake up in larger slices, it’s guaranteed to be a hit at your next gathering. With ingredients you can easily get at any grocery store, even down to the spring form pan, it’s also easy to make right in the fully equipped kitchens of your Cannon Beach vacation rental.

The season of pumpkin spice is upon us! Everywhere you turn in the grocery store aisles, there seems to be a new product boasting the flavor. From Cheerios and Oreos to ice cream and even protein powder, it’s inescapable.

And while we fully support the delicious fall flavor, this month, we’re turning our eyes toward another seasonal treat with our gooey and delicious Pecan Pie Bars. Whether you try this recipe while on vacation or in the comforts of your own home, we hope you love it as much as we do.

Pecan Pie Bar Ingredients

Pecan pie takes a turn as a bar cookie – and a rich one at that.

Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in ¾ cup butter thoroughly with pastry blender until mixture resembles very fine crumbs. Press mixture evenly into a greased 9×13 pan, using a piece of plastic wrap to press crumb mixture firmly in pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 17 to 20 minutes or until lightly browned.

Combine brown sugar, corn syrup, and ½ cup butter in a saucepan; bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring gently. Remove from heat. Stir one-fourth of hot mixture into beaten eggs; add to remaining hot mixture. Stir in pecans and vanilla. Pour filling over crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 34 to 35 minutes or until set. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

Makes 16 large or 32 small bars.

*Note: these are very rich, so you can cut them into smaller squares or again diagonally.

Serve these delicious treats up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or just enjoy a tasty bite of pecan pie when you’re on the go.

Year after year, nearly 20,000 whales can be seen passing by the coast of Oregon. Migrating from Alaska to Mexico and back again, gray whales will swim either north or south and present one of the most amazing sights to observe in the whole state. If you’re planning a trip to Cannon Beach or Arch Cape, you might want to start considering how you can align your trip with the passing whale population. Here is everything you need to know about whale watching in the area to make it a trip you won’t soon forget.

What to Expect When Whale Watching

Gray whales travel around 12,000 miles every year from Alaska to Baja California and back again. That’s nearly half the distance of the equator, every year! This biannual passage typically starts around mid-March through mid-April though some can be seen as late as May or throughout the Summer if they decide to stick around. Around 200 whales will stay along the Oregon Coast most years but the best chance of seeing them out and about is during this migration especially in late March. The other chance to see them passing back hits its peak in mid-December to mid-January.

As the whales pass by, you’ll be able to observe them breaching as they jump out above the surface of the water. You’ll see them fluking which refers to when their tails come out of the water before they dive and you can often catch them spouting as they exhale above the surface of the water. It’s truly an amazing sight to behold and there are many options near Cannon Beach to see these magnificent sea creatures.

Where to Spot the Whales

Not only fun for visitors but locals as well, there are quite a few local favorites to choose from when selecting your whale watching perch. Nearby to Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park that offers one of the best views in the area for spotting. You can grab a vantage point near the main parking lot or take a hike to the top of Clatsop Loop Trail and check out the view from up there. You can also look out from the grassy dunes that extend north from Haystack Rock. It’s not very high up but sightings are still possible, just make sure to bring your binoculars!

In Arch Cape, there is a viewpoint in the nearby Neahkahnie Mountain. Typically, Oregon State Parks organize volunteers to help visitors spot the whales at different points along the coast including the Neahkanie Mountain viewpoint and one at Ecola State Park. Check their website for updates pertaining to their schedule during COVID.

Hiking the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT) is no walk in the park. The trail spans Oregon’s entire coastline and demands 380 miles of hiking (425 if you omit the recommended ferries at water crossings). If you don’t look after your health and wellness during the trek, then you can quickly expend your energy and resources trying to reach the finish line. That’s no way to complete a marathon hike like the OCT (more like 14.5 marathons).

Our home base of Cannon Beach falls within the southern half of the OCT’s 36-mile-long Section 1 between Fort Stevens State Park and Oswald West State Park. Here in this picturesque coastal town, you can simply restock supplies, camp out for the night, and get back on the trail early the next morning. Or, you can plan on taking some well-needed R&R to slow down and enjoy some time making Cannon Beach a relaxing basecamp.

With that said, here are three ways you can step up your Oregon Coast Trail experience with an extended stay at Cannon Beach.

1. Spend A Couple Nights In A Vacation Rental Instead Of A Tent

Nothing against camping, but when the opportunity arises to get a good night’s sleep in a warm bed, it’s a good idea to choose that option. The best accommodations for spending a night or two at Cannon Beach are Beachcomber Vacation Rentals. Clean beds and rooms, comfy living spaces, and a vast selection of rentals with space for any group size are just the beginnings of what you can expect staying in one of our vacation homes or suites.

If you’re still looking to keep a more minimalist approach to your vacation rental stay, then our Guest Suites are best for you. They come fully furnished, accommodate up to four guests, and come with great features such as full kitchens and close access to local shops and restaurants.

To truly maximize your experience at Cannon Beach, you may want to consider booking a full vacation home. In addition to more living space and rooms to house larger groups, our vacation homes have a greater selection of desirable amenities. After a long few days on the Oregon Coast Trail, your legs will thank you for choosing a rental with a private hot tub and/or pool to soak in.

Depending on the time of year, the minimum nights to stay in our rental suites and homes may vary. Many require a minimum of 2 nights, but you can also call our office at 855-219-4758 to ask about single-night options.

2. Enjoy Proper Warm Meals Out Before Turning Back To Camp Food

Just as with opting for a bed over a sleeping pad, it’s nice to enjoy warm meals at a restaurant over camp food after a long day on the trail. Here in Cannon Beach, we have a great selection of local restaurants to check out during your stay.

For a sensational breakfast or brunch, you have to hit up Lazy Susan Cafe. Coffee-lovers should also check out the Sleepy Monk Cafe for a great extra cup of joe. For lunch, the move to make is dining at Pizza a’fetta, a locals-favorite since 1988. Finally, enjoy a flavorful dinner out at Castaway’s Global Cuisine, Cannon Beach’s top restaurant on TripAdvisor.

Alternatively, if you still want to dine in during your OCT stop in Cannon Beach, you’ll have access to a full kitchen at your vacation rental. Head to Fresh Foods or Mariner’s Market for your groceries, and then get to cooking a delicious home meal!

3. Explore More Of The Spectacular Surrounding Wilderness On Land And Sea

Finally, you’ll want to spend a little extra time in Cannon Beach during your Oregon Coast Trail trip just for the sheer number of things to do and see. There are so many ways to explore the epic scenery surrounding Cannon Beach that you’d be remiss to not take at least a few of them on.

The first things you’ll have to try out during your stay will be the water activities at Cannon Beach. You can rent surf boards to ride the fun waves around Ecola State Park. If you prefer a more mild outing on the water, then pick up a paddleboard or kayak to cruise the calm tributaries and lakes around Cannon Beach. Summer is the prime time to surf, paddleboard, and kayak, but you can enjoy all these watersports nearly all times of the year.

Another exploration option is to check out trails other than the OCT. While the entirety of the OCT is spectacular, it’s path through Cannon Beach only scratches the surface of what gorgeous trails are out there to discover. If you want to take in the scenery on land without adding more hikes to your trip, you can do that too! Rent a bike to cruise around the many beaches and/or go tidepooling to discover the fascinating sea critters living along the shore’s nooks and crannies.

Taking a break here at Cannon Beach doesn’t have to mean shutting down the activity train. On the contrary, we encourage you to get out and explore even more during your extended stay in our wonderful mountain town. Be sure to check out our Things To Do page for even more fun activities to try out.

Those are our three ways for how you can enhance your Oregon Coast Trail experience by spending a little extra time at Cannon Beach. Head to our vacation rentals page to browse available homes and guest suites for your stay. Also, learn more about the OCT and its 10 sections by heading to the OCT trip-planning website.
