Year after year, nearly 20,000 whales can be seen passing by the coast of Oregon. Migrating from Alaska to Mexico and back again, gray whales will swim either north or south and present one of the most amazing sights to observe in the whole state. If you’re planning a trip to Cannon Beach or Arch Cape, you might want to start considering how you can align your trip with the passing whale population. Here is everything you need to know about whale watching in the area to make it a trip you won’t soon forget.
What to Expect When Whale Watching
Gray whales travel around 12,000 miles every year from Alaska to Baja California and back again. That’s nearly half the distance of the equator, every year! This biannual passage typically starts around mid-March through mid-April though some can be seen as late as May or throughout the Summer if they decide to stick around. Around 200 whales will stay along the Oregon Coast most years but the best chance of seeing them out and about is during this migration especially in late March. The other chance to see them passing back hits its peak in mid-December to mid-January.
As the whales pass by, you’ll be able to observe them breaching as they jump out above the surface of the water. You’ll see them fluking which refers to when their tails come out of the water before they dive and you can often catch them spouting as they exhale above the surface of the water. It’s truly an amazing sight to behold and there are many options near Cannon Beach to see these magnificent sea creatures.
Where to Spot the Whales
Not only fun for visitors but locals as well, there are quite a few local favorites to choose from when selecting your whale watching perch. Nearby to Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park that offers one of the best views in the area for spotting. You can grab a vantage point near the main parking lot or take a hike to the top of Clatsop Loop Trail and check out the view from up there. You can also look out from the grassy dunes that extend north from Haystack Rock. It’s not very high up but sightings are still possible, just make sure to bring your binoculars!
In Arch Cape, there is a viewpoint in the nearby Neahkahnie Mountain. Typically, Oregon State Parks organize volunteers to help visitors spot the whales at different points along the coast including the Neahkanie Mountain viewpoint and one at Ecola State Park. Check their website for updates pertaining to their schedule during COVID.

Hiking the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT) is no walk in the park. The trail spans Oregon’s entire coastline and demands 380 miles of hiking (425 if you omit the recommended ferries at water crossings). If you don’t look after your health and wellness during the trek, then you can quickly expend your energy and resources trying to reach the finish line. That’s no way to complete a marathon hike like the OCT (more like 14.5 marathons).
Our home base of Cannon Beach falls within the southern half of the OCT’s 36-mile-long Section 1 between Fort Stevens State Park and Oswald West State Park. Here in this picturesque coastal town, you can simply restock supplies, camp out for the night, and get back on the trail early the next morning. Or, you can plan on taking some well-needed R&R to slow down and enjoy some time making Cannon Beach a relaxing basecamp.
With that said, here are three ways you can step up your Oregon Coast Trail experience with an extended stay at Cannon Beach.

1. Spend A Couple Nights In A Vacation Rental Instead Of A Tent
Nothing against camping, but when the opportunity arises to get a good night’s sleep in a warm bed, it’s a good idea to choose that option. The best accommodations for spending a night or two at Cannon Beach are Beachcomber Vacation Rentals. Clean beds and rooms, comfy living spaces, and a vast selection of rentals with space for any group size are just the beginnings of what you can expect staying in one of our vacation homes or suites.
If you’re still looking to keep a more minimalist approach to your vacation rental stay, then our Guest Suites are best for you. They come fully furnished, accommodate up to four guests, and come with great features such as full kitchens and close access to local shops and restaurants.
To truly maximize your experience at Cannon Beach, you may want to consider booking a full vacation home. In addition to more living space and rooms to house larger groups, our vacation homes have a greater selection of desirable amenities. After a long few days on the Oregon Coast Trail, your legs will thank you for choosing a rental with a private hot tub and/or pool to soak in.
Depending on the time of year, the minimum nights to stay in our rental suites and homes may vary. Many require a minimum of 2 nights, but you can also call our office at 855-219-4758 to ask about single-night options.

2. Enjoy Proper Warm Meals Out Before Turning Back To Camp Food
Just as with opting for a bed over a sleeping pad, it’s nice to enjoy warm meals at a restaurant over camp food after a long day on the trail. Here in Cannon Beach, we have a great selection of local restaurants to check out during your stay.
For a sensational breakfast or brunch, you have to hit up Lazy Susan Cafe. Coffee-lovers should also check out the Sleepy Monk Cafe for a great extra cup of joe. For lunch, the move to make is dining at Pizza a’fetta, a locals-favorite since 1988. Finally, enjoy a flavorful dinner out at Castaway’s Global Cuisine, Cannon Beach’s top restaurant on TripAdvisor.
Alternatively, if you still want to dine in during your OCT stop in Cannon Beach, you’ll have access to a full kitchen at your vacation rental. Head to Fresh Foods or Mariner’s Market for your groceries, and then get to cooking a delicious home meal!

3. Explore More Of The Spectacular Surrounding Wilderness On Land And Sea
Finally, you’ll want to spend a little extra time in Cannon Beach during your Oregon Coast Trail trip just for the sheer number of things to do and see. There are so many ways to explore the epic scenery surrounding Cannon Beach that you’d be remiss to not take at least a few of them on.
The first things you’ll have to try out during your stay will be the water activities at Cannon Beach. You can rent surf boards to ride the fun waves around Ecola State Park. If you prefer a more mild outing on the water, then pick up a paddleboard or kayak to cruise the calm tributaries and lakes around Cannon Beach. Summer is the prime time to surf, paddleboard, and kayak, but you can enjoy all these watersports nearly all times of the year.
Another exploration option is to check out trails other than the OCT. While the entirety of the OCT is spectacular, it’s path through Cannon Beach only scratches the surface of what gorgeous trails are out there to discover. If you want to take in the scenery on land without adding more hikes to your trip, you can do that too! Rent a bike to cruise around the many beaches and/or go tidepooling to discover the fascinating sea critters living along the shore’s nooks and crannies.
Taking a break here at Cannon Beach doesn’t have to mean shutting down the activity train. On the contrary, we encourage you to get out and explore even more during your extended stay in our wonderful mountain town. Be sure to check out our Things To Do page for even more fun activities to try out.
Those are our three ways for how you can enhance your Oregon Coast Trail experience by spending a little extra time at Cannon Beach. Head to our vacation rentals page to browse available homes and guest suites for your stay. Also, learn more about the OCT and its 10 sections by heading to the OCT trip-planning website.
From freshwater alpine lakes and rivers to offshore charters, Oregon’s fishing opportunities span across the state all year round. Fishing is one of the many favorite pastimes of both guests and locals, so if you’re looking to unwind under the evergreens by casting a line at one of the many premier fishing locations on the northern coast— you’re in luck! We’ve put together this guide to fishing on the Oregon Coast with tips from local anglers to help you plan the ultimate fishing getaway during your next trip to Cannon Beach.
When it comes to fishing in Oregon, there are as many ways to wet your hook as there are to bait it, which means it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what the best way will be for your fishing excursion.
Some of the most popular fishing methods for anglers on the north coast include deep-sea fishing & crabbing on a charter; shore fishing; freshwater fishing in lakes, rivers, and tributaries; and even clamming. These can all be done within an hour’s drive from your Cannon Beach vacation rental, though there are specific regulations and license you should be aware of for each type of fishing.
Fishing Rules & Regulations
Anyone over 12 needs a basic fishing license for trout and bass & additional tags are required for salmon, steelhead, and other ocean fish. Trout over 8 inches and bass can be caught year-round in lakes with only bag limits, but they share a bait restriction with steelhead and salmon during the summer (May 22-Aug 31) for spawning season. During this time, angling is restricted to artificial flies & lures in streams above tidewater (any running freshwater leading toward the ocean that is not affected by the tide) with exceptions near hatcheries so be sure to check ODFW’s site for local notices.
Ways To Make Your Catch
Lake Fishing
If you’re a newer angler looking to set up on one of the many coastal lakes for the day, the gear needed is simple; just a pole, some 10lb fishing line, split shot weights, and an assortment of hooks and baits to find what works best for you. You can usually use the same gear for both bass and trout. This is a great way to introduce your kids to fishing as the stakes are low and the payoff can be great! Bring your chair to the shore, teach the kids how to bait their hook and cast, then kick back and relax while you share quality time.
A local tip: when fishing for trout, the pink marshmallow bait will have them lining up to hop on your hook! The easiest things to catch at first will be branches and rocks. Practice casting a few times with just a weight before adding a hook and bait to get the feel for the pole and conditions.
Flyfishing
If you enjoy flyfishing, then head towards the mountains to one of the many mighty rivers that feed into the ocean in northwestern Oregon and try your luck at steelhead, salmon, trout, and bass. The Nehalem & Wilson Rivers are a few minutes south, and the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge is just a short drive north and all offer a huge variety of euryhaline fish (a fish that can be in both fresh and saltwater). During the summer, the only type of fishing allowed on most streams and rivers is fly fishing as it’s spawning season for many native fish.
A local tip: Use caution when wading into the water for flyfishing. The water will be cold and moving fast from snow melt, so be sure to come prepared!
Shore Fishing
If you’re looking to spend your days on the sandy beaches doing some shore fishing for rockfish, surfperch, and flatfish, you can do so from just about anywhere on the coast! All beaches in Oregon are public land so you can cast out from just about anywhere that feels good, but it’s important to know where your target likes to congregate. You can often find rockfish and surfperch close to shore near where waterways run into the ocean and near tidepools and jetties.
A Local Tip: Many shorefish prefer habitats near rocky areas where they can hide from predators. Please practice extreme caution and leave no trace principles on the rocks as they are part of the delicate tidepool ecosystems and can be extremely slippery
Fishing Charters
If you’re looking for a memorable fishing experience, a guest favorite is booking a charter boat. With an experienced guide, you can catch tuna, Pacific halibut, salmon, steelhead, and more. Most charters include gear, fishing licenses & tags, and oftentimes lunch which make them perfect for guests who are looking for a simple and fun way to get out and enjoy the coast from a unique point of view while they cast a line! There are several great charter groups that launch from nearby bays, and many also offer crabbing expeditions as well.
A local tip: if you’ve never gone on a boat on the ocean, seasickness can surprise you. The most turbulent waters are usually as you go from the bay out into open water so be prepared with ginger chews or non-drowsy motion sickness medicine and sit back and daydream of all the monsters you’ll shortly be catching.
Crabbing & Clamming
With 360 miles of coastline, it’s no surprise that crabbing and clamming are so popular! Digging for razor clams is a great way to get the kids worn out. Check out more about clamming here.
Crabbing for Dungeness and red rock crab is most often done via boat. There are a lot of great charter companies in the area with experienced guides that can help you get crab pots in the water, then pots full of crabs on the stove! You can also drop pots from docks, many local fishing shops have crab pots available to rent. Learn more about crabbing on the Oregon coast here.
Book Your Rental For Your Oregon Coast Fishing Trip

Each year, as the sun, moon, and earth reach a “just right” alignment, coastal regions across the world experience a phenomenon known as a King Tide. During these enormously high tides, water can rise to 13 feet – often several feet higher than average tides.
Along the Oregon coast, there are many great places to spot the King Tides, particularly in Cannon Beach. If you’re visiting this winter, and your trip aligns with this impressive sight, taking time to witness it firsthand is a must-do experience. To plan for your encounter, check out our guide to everything you need to know about the King Tide in Oregon and get ready for one of nature’s most magnificent showings.
What Dates are the King Tides in Oregon?
King Tides, more officially known by their scientific term Perigean Spring Tides, happen at different times of year around the world. Most occur during spring and fall, but in places like Hawaii, they happen more often in summer and winter.
The next King Tide in Oregon will occur January 11 – 13, 2025.
Where is the Best Place to See a King Tide in Oregon?
Oregon has many excellent viewing spots for the King Tides. If you’re in Cannon Beach, you can enjoy them from the comforts of your oceanfront Beachcomber vacation rental – one of the safest places to spectate. Or you can head to outcroppings near Haystack Rock, Indian Beach, Ecola State Park, or Shore Acres State Park just south of town in Coos Bay.
Wherever you choose to watch a King Tide on the Oregon coast, make sure you adhere to beach safety rules and stay clear of the water. These tides can stir up large pieces of driftwood and other debris. Sudden waves can sneak up on you and knock you off balance or sweep you out into the current. For these and other reasons, King Tides are best observed from a safe distance.
Many of the mentioned locations offer excellent photo opportunities, with some of Cannon Beach’s most iconic sites serving as the perfect backdrop for this event.
What is Considered a King Tide in Oregon?
A King Tides event is marked by an area experiencing its highest tide. This is due to the underlying cause of King Tides: gravitational pull.
A King Tide occurs when the Moon’s orbit is closest to Earth’s, the Earth’s orbit is closest to the Sun, and all three are in perfect alignment. The result is a stronger gravitational pull, which directly affects the tide during a full moon or new moon.
In Oregon, these winter tides cause water to rise one to two feet higher than usual. King Tides typically last around three hours and can cause flooding, erosion, and beach access closures.
What Happens at a King Tide?
Coastal areas experience a high tide several times a day. So, what makes King Tides so different? In addition to the debris and force we’ve already noted, King Tides in Oregon, and around the world, show us how areas may be affected by things like global warming.
As sea levels rise over time, King Tides will also rise higher and higher. Scientists, city planners, and engineers pay attention to King Tide season to note trends and use that data and information to make informed infrastructure decisions that can help preserve roads, homes, and beaches for coming years.
What Can I See After a King Tide?

As water levels recede after a King Tide, wonders fill the beaches, offering some of the year’s best beachcombing. The strength of the tide washes ashore everything from petrified wood to large driftwood pieces. Beachcombers can find sea glass, shark teeth, and other wonders in tide pools that cover the shore.
If you head out to the beach after a King Tide in Oregon, help us keep the shores clean by packing out any trash that may have washed up. If we each do our part, we can preserve our coastline for generations to come.
Do Storms Contribute to King Tides?
While storms do not cause King Tides, they can contribute to extensive damage if they occur during one. Storm surges can lead to property damage, flooding, and many other destructive outcomes.
Storm chasers tend to seek out coastal regions during King Tide seasons because they can capture remarkable imagery of powerful waves, lightning, and clouds over the already impressive surf.
See the King Tides in Cannon Beach

If you want to experience the incredible force of King Tides in Oregon for yourself, now’s the time to book your Cannon Beach getaway! The last tides of the season will occur in early January, and then we’ll have to wait until the end of 2025 before they return.
At Beachcomber Vacation Homes, we have gorgeous properties that will let you watch the King Tides right from your living room. After they recede, you’re just steps away from the sand, where you can explore the wonders left behind.

Death by Caramel Bars: The Perfect Thanksgiving Dessert

Ingredients
- 3 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
- 2 cups unsalted butter, melted
- 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup uncooked regular oats
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 6 (2.07 ounces) chocolate-coated caramel-peanut nougat bars, chopped (we recommend Snickers)
- 1 (14 ounces) can dulce de leche
Instructions
Combine the first 4 ingredients in a large bowl; stir well. Combine flour, oats, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add to butter mixture, stirring just until blended. Add chopped candy bars.
Spoon the batter into a greased aluminum foil-lined 9×13-inch pan coated with cooking spray, allowing foil to extend over ends of pan. (Pan will be very full.) Spoon dollops of dulce de leche over batter; swirl slightly into batter with a knife. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Remove to a wire rack and cool completely. (This may take several hours.) Use foil to lift uncut brownies out of pan. Peel foil from sides of uncut brownies, and cut into bars. Makes 2 dozen bars.

Most of us can agree that summer camping trips are a staple of childhood. Gather up the friends and/or family and hit the road with the promise of new adventures in nature. That escape into a new wilderness always brings along plenty of smiles and great memories to boot!
However, along with summer camping trips also come a handful of subtle but prevalent camping irritations. The tent that’s always missing a pole, dodgy campsite restrooms, sand getting everywhere, and an often-endless assault from mosquitos. For all its positive aspects, true camping can also bring a fair share of frustration.
What if we told you that you could have all the positives of summer camping with none of the grievances? The only change you have to make is to swap your tent for a vacation home. Then with a little creative activity planning – which we’ll explain below – you’ll have everything you’ll need for the new and improved summer camp.
Read on to see our perfect Cannon Beach vacation home summer camp activities itinerary!
Day 1 – Wake Up Fresh And Explore Ecola State Park
Ecola State Park is the perfect place to spend your first day of vacation-home summer camp in Cannon Beach. The state park contains 9 miles of awe-inspiring coastline between Cannon Beach and Seaside, and it includes the famous Tillamook Head. Ecola State Park also holds a fascinating historical significance involving the native Tillamook people.
This combination of gorgeous natural beauty and fascinating history make the state park the best first stop on your vacation-home camp.

Day 2 – Embark On A Tidepool Scavenger Hunt Near Haystack Rock
After a comfortable night’s rest in your vacation home, summer camp continues with an exciting scavenger hunt at the tidepools near Haystack Rock. Here you’ll find a variety of crabs, fish, corals, sponges and more hiding in the shallow pools. Challenge yourself, your family and friends to see who can spot the most different species of marine.
Also, don’t forget to watch for the many species of sea birds riding the wind above Cannon Beach’s famous tidepools.

Day 3 – Meet The Local Wildlife At The Seaside Aquarium
In addition to cozy beds and comfortable amenities, another perk of opting for a vacation home instead of a summer campsite is the ease of access to the local town attractions. One spot that fits the spirit of summer camp perfectly is the Seaside Aquarium at the south end of Cannon Beach.
At this aquarium, there are the traditional captivating water tank exhibits and fun touch pools. However, the showstopping attraction here is the opportunity to feed Seaside Aquarium’s playful seals! Purchase some seal food at the aquarium and watch these cute, charming sea mammals jump for joy to be fed.

Day 4 – Play Some Old-Fashioned Beach Games At Cannon Beach
No camping trip is complete without a day or two to play a few games in the open grass or along a sandy beach. Here at Cannon Beach, we think you can figure out which field of play we’re going to suggest.
The many picturesque beaches of Cannon Beach are ideal for both sightseeing and some friendly competition. A day of touch football or ultimate frisbee on the dense sand is sure to bring laughs and smiles all-round to the whole crew of happy campers.

Day 5 – Cook A Big Camp-Style Meal And Relax For The Final Evening
For the last day of your vacation home summer camp, we recommend embracing the new accommodation and taking the day to relax in comfort at your home in paradise. Hang out and reflect on the many fun adventures, sing a few campfire songs around the living room, or just kick back and relax out on the deck.
At the end of the day, gather your camp squad to prepare one last summer-camp-inspired meal before sitting out on the deck and watching the sun set over the beautiful pacific northwest coast. As your last full Cannon Beach day comes to an end, take in a few final deep breaths of that refreshing coastal air before retiring a final time to your home’s comfy bed.
That right there is how you turn your vacation home into the perfect alternative summer camp destination. For more great camping-inspired things to do, be sure to check out our list of local outdoor activities. And, of course, reserve your new-and-improved summer campsite by browsing through our Cannon Beach vacation homes.

Every summer, Cannon Beach shines with a community event that attracts thousands of visitors and showcases elite coastal creativity. Bringing together sculptors, amateur artists, and families for a weekend of extraordinary talent, the Cannon Beach, Oregon Sandcastle Contest is one of the town’s most beloved traditions, spanning more than 60 years!
The tradition dates back to 1964, when an earthquake in Alaska triggered a tsunami that damaged parts of the Oregon Coast. Isolated from surrounding communities after the Elk Creek Bridge was washed out, Cannon Beach locals gathered on the beach to lift their spirits and have a little fun, and from that… a sandcastle contest was born! What started as a community event has grown into one of the largest and most celebrated sandcastle contests on the West Coast, drawing upwards of 15,000 visitors each year.
At Beachcomber Vacation Homes, we’re proud to be part of this tradition. We believe Cannon Beach isn’t just a place to visit, it’s a place to create lasting memories, whether you’re sculpting masterpieces in the sand or simply soaking up the coastal scenery with the people you love.

How the Sandcastle Contest Is Judged

Winning the Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest requires more than just an impressive sculpture; it’s about creativity, teamwork, and attention to detail. Judges focus on:
- Team Effort & Enthusiasm: How the team works together and their spirit during the build
- Subject & Composition: How well the sculpture tells a story or theme
- Design & Detail: Craftsmanship, texture, and visual impact
- Event Compliance: Following the rules, like using only natural materials and clearing tools before judging
- Final Appearance: A polished, cohesive sculpture that captures attention
Every sculpture reflects not just skill, but the heart and imagination of the builders behind it.
Want to Build the Perfect Sandcastle? Here’s How
If you’re inspired to build your own sandcastle masterpiece, a few key tips can help:
1. Start with wet sand.
A mix of 8 parts sand to 1 part water creates the best texture for shaping and carving.
2. Build a solid foundation.
Focus on packing your base firmly before adding height. The stronger the base, the more creative you can get on top.
3. Bring the right tools.
Buckets and small shovels are essentials, but a putty knife, spatula, and even a paintbrush can help carve finer details and textures.
4. Work in layers.
Build slowly upward, smoothing and compacting as you go. Add delicate features last to avoid collapse.
